Description

This book is a political biography of the late S. Satyamurti, who flashed across the Indian political scene like a meteor in the twenties and thirties of the last century. His powers of eloquence, debate, and repartee are legendary, and instances of the last are quoted more than 40 years after his death in prison in 1943. Caught up in the nationalist surge of the first decade of the century, Satyamurti devoted all his life to the freedom struggle and was one of the prime architects of the Congress Party in his home state of Tamil Nadu. Yet his interests were wide-ranging and not confined to politics. Above all, he had a genuine zest for living. Despite a quick temper, he could make and retain lasting friendships. Even as a political biography, this work concentrates on Satyamurti, the parliamentarian, a role in which he was admittedly preeminent. Read more on this category.
